The Congressional Primary.

Wed Aug 9, 2006, 4:09 PM
Today was the primary elections for congress in the USA. For those of you who don’t know this is simply where the two major parties (republicans and democrats) elect their nominee. Now congress is the most important branch of the US government. They control the US, but also represent specific groups of Americans. So how important do we take this group? Well here are some figures:
-The national average voter turnout was 35.97% out of all registered voters.
-Only 4% of registered voters turned up in Virginia.
-No state got a turnout higher then 40%.

Obviously Americans just don’t care enough to get off our butts and vote. Yet we complain bitterly about racism or sexism in our congressmen and women. We are mad because it seems that everyone in D.C is a loony. And we are confused at why are government seems to be falling apart.

To begin with lets clear up a few misconceptions.
1) Not everything is Bush's fault. Bush is not a good president in my eyes. I do not agree with many of his policies or his way that he executes them, but he is not responsible for the various ridicules plans that congress comes up with (e.g. the Alaskan bridge to nowhere or The great wall of the US to keep immigrants out). These ideas are all congresses creative inventions.
2) Despite popular beliefs Congress for the most part knows that these things are stupid. Yes there are a few nut jobs out there but for the most part they understand the idiocy of these things. So why do they come up with them? Simple, for the voters. And this brings us back to the primaries.

The only people who show up to cote for the primaries are those who are fanatics. This means that only the Gay-bashing, gun-wielding republicans will come to the poles. And only the tree-hugging, granola-eating democrats come out. This means that you get the worst of both parties. To even get to the point where you are the nominee for your party you have to prove that you’re a wacko. So here's my question: Is it really so hard to get up from the couch, turn off whatever electrical appliance and go vote for some one who isn’t crazy? Think about it because after all these are the people who run your life.
